The Port Hardy region on Vancouver Island attracts so many whales that it sometimes seems as if traffic police are needed to manage the pods.

Whale watching is a popular activity for Vancouver Island residents and visitors.

  • Humpback Whales, Gray Whales and Minke Whales, Whale watching off Vancouver Island also includes dolphin sighting.which are resident over the summer months. They feed on small fish and crill (shrimp)
  • Orca or Killer Whales which follow the salmon runs into the area
  • Pacific White Sided Dolphins, which are also drawn by the salmon and herring.

Among the most popular whales are the Gray Whales, which are found closer to shore. Often curious about boats and people, they often come close enough that you can imagine touching them. They bulldoze the bottom straining out worms, fish and sand shrimp

The Humpback Whales breach and splash and slap their enormous pectoral and caudal fins on the surface in order to corral the small fish and shrimp they eat.
