Tuna Fishing With Starfish Charters
With the long range capability of the 28 ft Bayliner Trophy ( 240 US Gal), I am able to take guests out to the tuna grounds! The Tuna that we are going after are the albacore tuna which range from 10 to 40 pounds. Tuna fishing on the North Island is very dependent on the temperature of the water off of the coast and also dependent on the weather because of the long run that we have to make out to the warm water edge. A typical Tuna fishing day starts at 3:00 am and we are back at the dock at 7:00 pm.
2015 was the first summer that Starfish Charters took guests out Tuna fishing, and with great success! on the first trip 20 were in the boat, the second trip produced a total of 58!
Because of all the factors involved with going on such a trip, It is difficult to say whether or not a trip out is possible because we half to have updated sea surface temperature information, wheather information, and a general location of where the warm water current is located so that the trip can be arranged. Typically the tuna season is later in the season beginning in August and running into September.
